No bumps on the road with this one – A smooth clean Speysider with all flowers, fruit and vanilla notes.

I think the setting was loads of more “Hygge” than the dram surprising in burst of taste. Don’t get me wrong it is a nice dram

I was visiting my good friend and picking up some Viking things for some pictures in the making and all natural – the talk turned into whisky talk
A while ago my friend @h.lindstrom wrote me that he was enjoying a dram of Linkwood and he was saving some for me. Lucky me he hadn’t emptied yet and today was the day for a sip.

My nose was meet with a slight waxy note then came all the “classic” Speyside fruity and flower notes. The taste came rolling soft with vanilla, flowers, some citrus and a mix of new leather and grass.
I think if we have had more time this evening and none of use was to go anywhere this could have been the kind of pleasant easy drinking whisky we could have made a large dip into.

This is my first experience with Linkwood. I don’t think it will be my last but when that is said this is not at whisky knocking me over.

It has a nice oily mouth feel and the taste is vanilla, flowerish with the sherry wood taking the lead in the long finish.
In the middle I get some kind of petroleum’ish taste which is a little awkward but over all a nice dram.

Linkwood has not that many core range bottles on the marked and is mostly used in blends. That does not make it a pour whisky at all! Linkwood has one of the whiskies that gives blends complexity. More about that later.

My son had made lunch and subsequently he served a dram I have not tasted before and from a bottler I have not tasted anything from before.

This is a whisky you have to be really patient with. You are greeted with a serious alcohol puff and it burns when you get it in your mouth. Yes, it is 58.6%, but with 10 years behind it, you might expect a somewhat more round experience.

Leave it in the glass, give it some water. Then you get a different experience and it pulls it to another level of taste.

Benrinnes is a Speyside distillery and you get the classic flower notes, but it is a warm flower meadow

Rauff & Fagerberg is a very young Danish company, founded in Odense, in April 2020, by Jørn Rauff and his wife Karina Fagerberg.
I have not been able to find a website for them, but I can see on instagram that there are several bottles to choose from.

Definitely a whisky you need to give time and preferably also some water to open it up. It’s not a whisky I would give someone new to the whisky game. Someone who has tried the whiskies that burn in the mouth and can hold it some time in the mouth will definitely be able to have a pleasure with this whisky and it will be a dram that can last for a while.

Caol Ila with a different touch of what I have tasted – and I love it.
Right after I opened this bottle of Caol Ila from Golden Drops who has it as an Independent bottler, I tasted some bitterness and my expectations lowered, actually I was a little disappointed -BUT! after some patience I was rewarded.

So my first advise is; Buy the bottle!
Next advice is; Open it, pour a dram and have patience with the first sip a least 20 min.

I do not recall ever having referred to a scent of tomato sauce in a whisky but that was one of these experiences I got. A lovely thick well spiced tomato sauce ready to be poured over a bowl of steaming hot spaghetti. Another scent that surprised me was what I will recall as Marmite – Yes the food spread made from yeast extract. Oh well it is a by-product of beer brewing and high i vitamins
It is this meatiness that for me makes a difference and that it brings other aromas into the picture than other more streamlined whiskies.

It started in a ex-bourbon cask and finished in a first-fill oloroso sherry cask for 2 years. The sherry is not over powering and mingles perfect with the peat smoked barley from Caol Ila and the sweetness from the American oak wood.

So if you like Caol Ila and want a unik Caol Ila taste you need to visit Golden Drops to get your bottle. Only 287 bottle were sendt to the marked – and Golden Drops have them all.

There is much very nice whisky in this world and North Star Spirits has brought another to the market which is simply delicious and at the same time with an expression that shows that young whisky is definitely worth looking for. It is only 5 years old, but is round and soft.

Several may want to wrinkle their noses when they see it is a Blended Malt. I just have to say that if they do not want to throw themselves over it, then it is their decision and I think they are missing out on a nice dram.

It is made from whisky that all come from Campbeltown. We are not told which distilleries are involved and I dare not guess the composition, and it also means less to me when it’s something that tastes great.

It could be really exciting to know where it comes from tough, I will admit that, but we will probably never know.
If we are to guess a little anyway, there are only 3 distilleries in Campbeltown; Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle. Maybe this will make it a little easier – I don’t know.

It could be from just one distillery or all three. Springbank is a robust whisky so I don’t think there is very much of this in the dram. I lean more to the fruity and lighter Glen Scotia, but mostly I think it is from Glengyle. It is young, smoky, soft, round, fruity, toffee sweet and with some salty notes. That matches fine with the Kilkerran’s I have tasted.

No matter what, it’s a lovely dram and considering its age it’s amazingly soft, round and pleasant.

Spica Edition number 2 from North Star Spirits. This time 29 years old and a completely different whiskey.
When I first put it to my nose I was not impressed and at first sip I was disappointed. It was anything but what I had imagined.
Spica 20 years old was sweet and filling, this was was next to the opposite.

I poured a little more into the glass and out into the kitchen and did the dishes.
Just over 20 minutes later I was sitting at the table again, ready to give Spica 29 years another chance.

I’m really glad I did – it was a whole different experience. Now came more of the raisins, sweetness, plums and the lovely malt notes I had hoped to find.

In other words, this is a dram you have to honor the length of the maturation time by giving it time to wake up.
If you have patience you will get a nice dram.
You will sometimes be in doubt whether it is a single malt or a blended whiskey you have in the glass.

Open it – Let it wake up with a little air – Savor it

You must leave it at least 15 minutes till it has gotten some air, then it becomes delicious and elegant.
It is very different from its 20 year old predecessor which was very sweet in the taste.

From North Star Spirits back in 2018, a thick and bright star – Spica, the 16th brightest star and part of the zodiac sign Virgo.

This is definitely a shining star in the blended whisky sky.

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed such a rich blended whisky.
I will refrain from figuring out the comparisons between zodiac signs and whisky, as well as how far out in the universe they are, but my taste buds have a good experience.
It is an amazing desert whisky in my eyes. It has fullness like a heavy port wine, sweetness as a vanilla ice cream and brownie desert and warmth for a cool evening.

I can not find anything on the casks used, but the sherry is so dominant that it has to have been maturing in some kind of sherry casks. It can be both Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez (PX) but I think the dominant casks used are the PX. American oak can also have been used. That is were I think we get the vanilla sweetnes from.

I spoke about Spica 20 years old, having it in the evenings line up at a tasting. Several were surprised that it was a blended whisky and not a single malt, but fortunately it shows that there is more between heaven and earth, meaning that you cheat yourself by not also exploring blended whisky (if you don’t of course )

An excellent dram, maybe in the sweet end for me, but the bottle is empty now, so it can not have been completely bad

I was invited as guest speaker at a online tasting hosted by Vault of Spirit a Danish web shop.
We tasted 6 whiskies with different expressions and had 480 participants sitting at home enjoying some good whisky and talk provided by Daniel The Whisky Viking, Benedikte (the owner of Vault of Spirits) and me.

Bunnahabhain mainly make unpeated whisky – actually 65% is unpeated, so that leaves 35% for the peated whisky and when they smoke, they smoke heavy.

Wilson & Morgan is an independent bottler of Scotch malt whisky and have been selecting casks for bottling since 1992. You can get a little disorientated by the name and think Wilson & Morgan is English or Scottish but they are Italian. Maybe I will tell about Independent bottlers in another post. I love the saying or rule the Wilson & Morgan CEO Fabio Rossi follows when he chooses the different casks: “Trust your palate and your instinct.” – This is what is all about.

I like Bunnahabhain whiskies and this one is no exception, But it is very classic to the Islay style. I think if I had this one and an Ardbeg “Wee Beastie” that also has been matured for 5 years in ex-bourbon casks, I don’t think I can tell the difference. Well maybe I should try that one day.

This is a easy drinking young peated whisky and if you are liking Islay whiskies, you will like this one as well. What can I say – Just do it
Give it a few drops of water and you tame it a little.

I believe this one was rated the evenings top whisky from the participants.

For a comparison of two Wilson & Morgan Bunnahabhain 2014 editions, a 5 year old and this 6 year old. We tasted these at an online tasting at Vaults of Spirit, where I was invited as a guest speaker.
480 participants were sitting at home enjoying some good whisky and hopefully the talk Daniel The Whisky Viking, Benedikte and I had about the whiskies.

It is much like it’s one year younger sister or brother bottle. They have both matured in 500 liter Butts and I believe it is ex-bourbon in both cases. This one have some more softness in the smoke on the nose and it is like I can taste hints og dried fruits, notes I didn’t get in the younger.

It is two well made youngsters with a smoke kick and a fine tuned taste of Islay.

You can bet on the Angel’s are singing with this 50 Years Old Blended Scotch Whisky from That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

We are talking about some absolutly delisious smooth whisky here!
I was so lucky that my good friend Tommy offered me a dram of this wonderful whiskey. He was secretive and almost had Christmas lights in his eyes when he poured. He would not tell anything at all about the whisky and I was not allowed to see bottle before tasting. He wanted to hear my opinion.
What a delicious taste, soft, full-bodied, pleasant. The scent was just as fabulous

This was released in January 2018 and if you go 50 years back to 1968 this is year this beautiful blended whisky was laid to rest in caskes.

I could tell you what’s in the bottle but then it would be no fun, but I think you would be surpriced to hear what blend it is.

Oh what the heck, let’s play a little.

In the blend you will find Highland Park, Macallan and Glenturret.

Somewhere in Scotland a pretty famous bird plays a huge roll in the game.

I think you are abel to figure out what we are dealing with

But I am telling you, this is good whisky and if you are one of those people that olny sip single malt – Man you are missing out on good stuff!
