Caol Ila with a different touch of what I have tasted – and I love it.
Right after I opened this bottle of Caol Ila from Golden Drops who has it as an Independent bottler, I tasted some bitterness and my expectations lowered, actually I was a little disappointed -BUT! after some patience I was rewarded.

So my first advise is; Buy the bottle!
Next advice is; Open it, pour a dram and have patience with the first sip a least 20 min.

I do not recall ever having referred to a scent of tomato sauce in a whisky but that was one of these experiences I got. A lovely thick well spiced tomato sauce ready to be poured over a bowl of steaming hot spaghetti. Another scent that surprised me was what I will recall as Marmite – Yes the food spread made from yeast extract. Oh well it is a by-product of beer brewing and high i vitamins
It is this meatiness that for me makes a difference and that it brings other aromas into the picture than other more streamlined whiskies.

It started in a ex-bourbon cask and finished in a first-fill oloroso sherry cask for 2 years. The sherry is not over powering and mingles perfect with the peat smoked barley from Caol Ila and the sweetness from the American oak wood.

So if you like Caol Ila and want a unik Caol Ila taste you need to visit Golden Drops to get your bottle. Only 287 bottle were sendt to the marked – and Golden Drops have them all.

: Medium to long. Actually some of the smoke notes keep hanging for quite a long time. The smoke notes are tar ashy, umami and peppery with a nice tinkle on the front of the tongue. Just a little wood feel after some time. A touch of sherry.

I added ½ teaspoon water – after all it is 57,2% and it calmes down a little, not that it needs it in my opinion. On the nose it becomes more medicinal but it keeps the lovely saucy meatyness in both nose and taste. The taste mellows in the smoke and open more of the grassy and wood notes.

Hunting season is almost about to begin and I am looking forward to the mornings and evenings where I will be waiting or walking around for a deer. Observing the animals and nature.
This picture is from a hunt back in January. I had a great day in perfect weather, it was cold but beautiful. The riffel was unloaded and the sun was setting. I poured my self a dram of Bowmore 12 year old and enjoyed the moment of silence, the warming whisky and good day in nature.

Bowmore 12 years old is a fine core range whisky if you like peat smoke. It warmes you up and give you a very pleasant after taste.

It does not feel very oily, but the taste stays amazingly long.

I know we can divide whiskies into categories of when you can drink what in which type of weather, time of the year and so on, but I like peated whiskies and can enjoy then all year round and in any weather.
With this Bowmore 12 year old it is the same. It is a nice core range whisky at a fair price and I could sip it every day. Just one of those whiskies you have to have in the cabinet.

Laphroaig 18 years old is in my opinion just a fabulous Whisky.

The combination of sweetness and peat, honey and tar. Oak and the Sea. Soft, creamy, warm and spicy. Nutty and toffee. Leather and dark chocolate.

Laphroaig 18 Years Old was introduced in 2009 as a replacement for the 15 Year Old. In 2016 it was discontinued again to be replaced by “Lore”.
Why discontinue a perfect whisky, well one reason could be or more likely the reason is shortage of aged whisky at the higher age.
I have heard that the 10 year old takes quit a bit of the older stock to keep up demands. There are other Laphroaig’s with age statement, but not many. There is a 16 years old that was released in connection to Laphroaig’s 200th anniversary, so it might not be long on the marked and a 25 years old that is released annually. Some very Limited Editions of 30 years old and higher are also released from time to time.

The 18 year old is a whisky I could enjoy for a long time. Just sit and nose it and sip quietly. If I had a bottle, this would be the whisky I would enjoy either on a evening where I just had to relaxe and let my head have a break from everything or when having a cozy evening with good friends that prizes good whisky.

Yes please, this is just a beautiful whisky and Hard to find.
It has everything I like.

It is a beast of a fabulous Whisky in the Laphroaig core range. Lore has released the 18 years old. I really enjoyed the 18 years old but this one is a fine replacement when it comes to that.

Knowledge passed down from generation to generation has given Lore the name and the richness.

With whisky matured between 7 to 21 years in a combination of first fill sherry butts and quarter casks you get a spicy peated whisky with a salty mineral taste.

I know there are many opinions on the non age statement Lore vs. price and that it has released the 18 year old, but let it go, just enjoy Lore it is a very enjoyable whisky with a good Traditional Laphroaig taste, a nice deepth of taste.
Maybe not the richest of the rich Laphroaig’s I have tasted but it is nice and I favour it and will recommend it.

Bunnahabhain mainly make unpeated whisky – actually 65% is unpeated, so that leaves 35% for the peated whisky and when they smoke, they smoke heavy.

Wilson & Morgan is an independent bottler of Scotch malt whisky and have been selecting casks for bottling since 1992. You can get a little disorientated by the name and think Wilson & Morgan is English or Scottish but they are Italian. Maybe I will tell about Independent bottlers in another post. I love the saying or rule the Wilson & Morgan CEO Fabio Rossi follows when he chooses the different casks: “Trust your palate and your instinct.” – This is what is all about.

I like Bunnahabhain whiskies and this one is no exception, But it is very classic to the Islay style. I think if I had this one and an Ardbeg “Wee Beastie” that also has been matured for 5 years in ex-bourbon casks, I don’t think I can tell the difference. Well maybe I should try that one day.

This is a easy drinking young peated whisky and if you are liking Islay whiskies, you will like this one as well. What can I say – Just do it
Give it a few drops of water and you tame it a little.

I believe this one was rated the evenings top whisky from the participants.

For a comparison of two Wilson & Morgan Bunnahabhain 2014 editions, a 5 year old and this 6 year old.
It is much like it’s one year younger sister or brother bottle. They have both matured in 500 liter Butts and I believe it is ex-bourbon in both cases. This one have some more softness in the smoke on the nose and it is like I can taste hints og dried fruits, notes I didn’t get in the younger.

It is two well made youngsters with a smoke kick and a fine tuned taste of Islay.
