No bumps on the road with this one – A smooth clean Speysider with all flowers, fruit and vanilla notes.

I think the setting was loads of more “Hygge” than the dram surprising in burst of taste. Don’t get me wrong it is a nice dram

I was visiting my good friend and picking up some Viking things for some pictures in the making and all natural – the talk turned into whisky talk
A while ago my friend @h.lindstrom wrote me that he was enjoying a dram of Linkwood and he was saving some for me. Lucky me he hadn’t emptied yet and today was the day for a sip.

My nose was meet with a slight waxy note then came all the “classic” Speyside fruity and flower notes. The taste came rolling soft with vanilla, flowers, some citrus and a mix of new leather and grass.
I think if we have had more time this evening and none of use was to go anywhere this could have been the kind of pleasant easy drinking whisky we could have made a large dip into.

This is my first experience with Linkwood. I don’t think it will be my last but when that is said this is not at whisky knocking me over.

It has a nice oily mouth feel and the taste is vanilla, flowerish with the sherry wood taking the lead in the long finish.
In the middle I get some kind of petroleum’ish taste which is a little awkward but over all a nice dram.

Linkwood has not that many core range bottles on the marked and is mostly used in blends. That does not make it a pour whisky at all! Linkwood has one of the whiskies that gives blends complexity. More about that later.

A lovely fresh whisky 10 years old. Matured in sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks.
You will be greeted with fresh fruit in the aroma and Highland Park’s characteristic aroma and taste of the peat from Orkney, honey and heather mixed with sherry notes and soft peat smoke.

It’s not a big heavy whisky, but a delicate every day whisky.

My son had made lunch and subsequently he served a dram I have not tasted before and from a bottler I have not tasted anything from before.

This is a whisky you have to be really patient with. You are greeted with a serious alcohol puff and it burns when you get it in your mouth. Yes, it is 58.6%, but with 10 years behind it, you might expect a somewhat more round experience.

Leave it in the glass, give it some water. Then you get a different experience and it pulls it to another level of taste.

Benrinnes is a Speyside distillery and you get the classic flower notes, but it is a warm flower meadow

Rauff & Fagerberg is a very young Danish company, founded in Odense, in April 2020, by Jørn Rauff and his wife Karina Fagerberg.
I have not been able to find a website for them, but I can see on instagram that there are several bottles to choose from.

Definitely a whisky you need to give time and preferably also some water to open it up. It’s not a whisky I would give someone new to the whisky game. Someone who has tried the whiskies that burn in the mouth and can hold it some time in the mouth will definitely be able to have a pleasure with this whisky and it will be a dram that can last for a while.

Caol Ila with a different touch of what I have tasted – and I love it.
Right after I opened this bottle of Caol Ila from Golden Drops who has it as an Independent bottler, I tasted some bitterness and my expectations lowered, actually I was a little disappointed -BUT! after some patience I was rewarded.

So my first advise is; Buy the bottle!
Next advice is; Open it, pour a dram and have patience with the first sip a least 20 min.

I do not recall ever having referred to a scent of tomato sauce in a whisky but that was one of these experiences I got. A lovely thick well spiced tomato sauce ready to be poured over a bowl of steaming hot spaghetti. Another scent that surprised me was what I will recall as Marmite – Yes the food spread made from yeast extract. Oh well it is a by-product of beer brewing and high i vitamins
It is this meatiness that for me makes a difference and that it brings other aromas into the picture than other more streamlined whiskies.

It started in a ex-bourbon cask and finished in a first-fill oloroso sherry cask for 2 years. The sherry is not over powering and mingles perfect with the peat smoked barley from Caol Ila and the sweetness from the American oak wood.

So if you like Caol Ila and want a unik Caol Ila taste you need to visit Golden Drops to get your bottle. Only 287 bottle were sendt to the marked – and Golden Drops have them all.

I really enjoy Caol Ila and this one has given me a new angle on what Caol Ila can do. Nice sweetness from the years in the ex-bourbon cask and a spicy touch, dryness and fruitiness from the sherry cask. A really fine combination.

Talisker whisky is something I really appreciate and it is no exception with Talisker 18 years old.

Something special happens with the combination of smoke, sea, sherry casks and time. The heavy smoke in the younger Talisker is lovely and does the job, but this 18 year old has hit something, in my taste absolutely amazing. The softness in this whisky can make most non-smoke fanatics to like smoked whisky. In my optics, it is a shame to give new whisky drinkers the heavily smoked whisky. You should rather serve a good, well-stored pleasant smoked whisky so they can get the experience that it can taste good and not just be a smoke bomb right in the nose and throat.

Talisker 18 years old is a smoked whisky I would serve anyone that want a good experience with smoked whisky, and yes, there are a whole lot of less smoked whiskies that you can start with but saying this 18 year old can turn many.

Talisker 18 years old can sometimes be hard to get hold of and can be a little pricey, but still it does not run off in the same way as other 18 year old ones can do. I think you get really good whisky at a reasonable price.

Is there room for a new player on the field?
In my opinion – always, and if they start out playing the good taste game they might just stay in the game for a long time.
This is how I feel about The new kid on Isle of Skye – Torabhaig.

Isle of Skye now have two distilleries operating and sending whisky on the marked. Talisker which has a special place in my heart and now Torabhaig which has made a pretty good impression with this first release.

Torabhaig 2017 The Inaugural Release is an NAS whisky, but if the distillery started distilling in 2017 and bottled late 2020 or start 2021 it will be just 3 years old. Some times peated whisky at the age of 3 can give you at hard kick in the nose and mouth but you don’t feel that with this one. It is pleasant and easy to drink and I think many would guess it to be older. You are not flipped over by complexity but you get at tasty well balanced whisky that is easy to fall in love with.

The peat level, the PPM is measured two time in this one and it is pretty cool that Torabhaig has done that. Not many go through the trouble find the actual ppm in the bottle. Usually we only get the ppm measured in the malt after it has been dried and this will show a higher ppm than the finished whisky that you will savour.
The ppm in The Inaugural Release is about 55-60 measured in the grain and ending up at 16 ppm in the bottle.

The transparentsy from Torabhaig distillery about what is used to make the whisky is high, so you are informed on the packaging that the whisky is made with Concerto malted barley and fermented with Pinnacle MG+ yeast. So if you want to be a little geeky you can be that here

For a little conclusion I will say this is a pretty good first release and I am looking forward to see what this will grow to be. I think, in time, some of the more known peated brands will have to step up their game if they don’t want to end up on the replacement bench.

Hunting season is almost about to begin and I am looking forward to the mornings and evenings where I will be waiting or walking around for a deer. Observing the animals and nature.
This picture is from a hunt back in January. I had a great day in perfect weather, it was cold but beautiful. The riffel was unloaded and the sun was setting. I poured my self a dram of Bowmore 12 year old and enjoyed the moment of silence, the warming whisky and good day in nature.

Bowmore 12 years old is a fine core range whisky if you like peat smoke. It warmes you up and give you a very pleasant after taste.

I know we can divide whiskies into categories of when you can drink what in which type of weather, time of the year and so on, but I like peated whiskies and can enjoy then all year round and in any weather.
With this Bowmore 12 year old it is the same. It is a nice core range whisky at a fair price and I could sip it every day. Just one of those whiskies you have to have in the cabinet.

It is so refreshing to taste whiskies where it is not just the standard methods that have been used and wupti, 10-12 years after we have a whisky that tastes a bit like all the others from the same area. It’s put up very square, but I think you get my point.
At a tasting not so long ago, the program was on 8 whiskies from GlenAllachie and it was a fabulos experience. I have previously tasted GlenAllachie 12 YO – PX-Oloroso sherry, finished in Virgin Oak. It was good but not a surprising experience so I may not have looked quite as much in the direction of GlenAllachie and it has been a clear mistake.

For this tasting conducted by Peter Kjær, Lars Gregersen and guesting from Scotland was Juliette Buchan. We tasted some fantastic whiskeys, but the one that caught attention was this one, which have matured in ex-bourbon casks and got an finish of approx. 18 month in an oak that has not been used much before.
The traditions have been to use American Oak for barrels, these are primarily the Oak called “Quercus Alba”, but here they have used an Oak, for their finish, which is not very common. It is called Chinquapin Oak and the Latin name is; “Quercus Muehlenbergii” and which is not a European Oak (Quercus Robur), but a species also from the United States.
Chinquapin Own comes from an area of ​​Missouri in the Northern Ozark region. Chinquapine is a subspecies of Quercus Alba, but it gives some other aromas to the whiskey which are more spicy than the slightly sweeter vanilla that come from Quercus Alba.
That’s what makes this GlenAllachie special and a whisky just to my mind and taste. It’s a little different, it’s exciting, it sticks out from the familiar and yet we know it as a good Speysider

It has the sweet vanilla from the first more than 10 years in regular Ex-Bourbon casks, but gets expressions of sweet licorice, orange, a little cardamom and rose hips. It has a wonderful sweet finish where the rose hips taste hangs for a while.

A wonderful whisky from the GlenAllachies Virgin Oak Series which is now on my whisky shelf. Classic and yet different, exciting. Soft and round in the taste.

The Vikings have brought back with them casks of Rioja wine.

Is it Twisted to mature whisky in wine casks? I think not.

Highland Park Twisted Tattoo is 16 years old and is a marriage of 153 casks laid down between 11th May 2000 and 29th October 2001, filled into 220 liter First-fill Rioja wine casks in January and March 2016 at 59.5% ABV.
70 First-fill Bourbon casks from 1999, filled at strength of between 63.6% and 63.7%. The 223 casks where married together in September 2018 and chill-filtered at 4°C.

The whisky is bottled at 46.7% ABV and has a lovely complexity with to changing palets.
The first taste is sweet creamy vanilla and a clear Rioja feel and red berries.
Then it changes to a more “classic” Highland Park expression with heather, honey, the Hobbister Moor Peat and some spiciness.
A lovely whisky that releases The “Full Volume” Another expression….. but okay.
Anyway the Twisted Tattoo is an interesting whisky with the Twist of the red wine casks.

Did you know Loki, one of the gods in the Norse mythology, had “children”? Oh well, it is a little Twisted
These children are no less than; The Fenris Wolf, Hel and The Midgard Serpent.

Jormungand (The Midgard serpent) was the second eldest child between Loki the Trickster and the giantess Angrboda. Kidnapped by the gods, he was cast into the waters that surround Midgard. There he laid until he grew so large that he ate large whales and was able to wrap himself around the world and bite his own tail.

The design on the bottle is a Tattoo of the Midgard Serpent twisting around a sword.

It is designed by the Danish Tattoo artist Colin Dale.
He is a very talented tattoo artist and modern Viking using the old techniques when tattooing and telling stories on skin.
Colin Dale was born in Canada but his roots are Danish.
A true skilled craftsman with a true Viking Soul.

I really like this Twisted Tattoo because of the different touch from the Rioja red wine. There is a lot of classic Highland Park taste with a good fruity twist.
